Baccarat Rules

The live baccarat rules are simple. The game uses six to eight standard decks of 52 cards, and the goal is to get as close to 9 points as possible with the cards dealt.

Baccarat rules

Aces count as 1 point, while cards 2 through 9 hold their face value. Tens and face cards count as zero. If the total reaches 10 or higher, you subtract 10, keeping only the remainder. For example, a 7 and 6 equals 13, but it counts as 3. A 4 and 6 equals 10, which counts as 0.

Players can bet on the Player, Banker, or Tie. Both the Player and Banker start with two cards. In some cases, a third card may be dealt to either or both. Whoever scores closest to 9 points wins the round. If a player scores 8 and the other scores less, the 8 wins. If neither has 8 or 9, a third card might be dealt.

The Third Card Rule

The third card rule determines when the Player and/or Banker is dealt a third card. If the Player’s initial score is between 0 and 5, they receive a third card; if the score is higher than 5, no third card is dealt. The Banker follows the same rule unless the Player receives a third card, in which case the Banker’s decision depends on their score and the value of the Player’s third card.

In this table, “H” stands for hit (draw a card), and “S” for stand (no card).

The bet on the participant with the higher score wins. If the Banker scores higher, the ‘Banker’ bet wins; if the Player scores higher, the ‘Player’ bet wins. In the event of a tie, bets on the Player and Banker are returned, and the ‘Tie’ bet wins.

  • A bet on the Player pays 2 to 1.
  • A bet on the Banker pays 2 to 1, minus a 5% commission (1.95 to 1).
  • A Tie bet pays 9 to 1 (or 8 to 1).

Baccarat Odds

Baccarat offers both some of the lowest and highest house edges in casino games. The Player bet has a low house edge of 1.24%, making it favorable compared to many other bets. The Banker bet, even with the 5% commission, offers an even lower house edge at 1.06%.

The Tie bet, however, carries a much higher risk. At an 8-to-1 payout, the house edge jumps to 14.4%. In most UK casinos, where the tie pays 9-to-1, the house edge drops to around 4.85%.

House Edge Details (8 Decks)

  • Banker win: 1.06%
  • Player win: 1.24%
  • Tie (8-to-1 payout): 14.4%
  • Tie (9-to-1 payout): 4.85%

Understanding these odds can help you make better bets and improve your strategy.

Baccarat Side Bets

Side bets are optional bets players can place alongside the main game bet. These side bets provide additional opportunities to win based on specific outcomes in the game. They typically focus on predicting events like pairs of cards or specific point differences in hand results. These bets allow players to wager on combinations like identical cards or the final hand score. Side bets can be placed separately, without needing to place a main bet. Each side bet has unique payout odds, depending on the probability of the event occurring. The side bets often get disabled after a certain number of rounds.

Baccarat Strategy

Each game’s result is independent of previous outcomes. Card counting won’t help since Player and Banker have almost equal chances. The Banker’s slight edge doesn’t significantly affect individual hands.

Tips for Playing

  • Avoid the Tie bet due to its high house edge.
  • Remember, the Banker’s box receives more cards, giving it a slight edge.
  • Don’t bet against a box that’s on a winning streak.
  • Odds shift with the number of decks used, so understand how deck count impacts bets:
    • 8-deck shuffle: Player edge: 1.06%, Banker: 1.24%, Tie: 14.36%.
    • 1 deck: Player edge: 1.01%, Banker: 1.29%, Tie: 15.57%.
    • 6-deck shuffle: Player edge: 1.06%, Banker: 1.24%, Tie: 14.44%.
  • Track the points in each hand to adjust your bets.
  • After all cards are played, Player and Banker wins tend to balance out close to 50/50.
